Reaching your weight loss goal can prove difficult and we know that no two weight loss journeys are the same. If you’re struggling to lose weight and have exhausted endless diets and exercise regimes, weight loss surgery could be the answer to achieving your health and weight loss goals.

Weight loss surgery is a surgical procedure that helps to control your appetite and reduce your portion size, making sticking to a healthy eating plan easier. Whilst there are various weight loss surgery options and these procedures will differ, ultimately, they are all designed to help you achieve your weight loss goals, an active lifestyle and in some cases reduce the risk of obesity health related problems.

Who is suitable for weight loss surgery?

You’ll need to meet certain criteria to qualify for weight loss treatment and one of the main criteria is your BMI (body mass index) which is the body mass divided by the square of the body height). Weight loss surgery can be considered in most people who have a BMI of over 40.

If you have an obesity-related condition such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea, joint problems, osteoarthritis, asthma or cardiovascular disease, you might be considered for surgery if your BMI is between 30 and 40. However every person is different and there are several factors to take into account, such as your family history and any previous attempts at weight loss.

Life after weight loss surgery

We’re here to support you every step of your journey with regular appointments, dedicated dietitians and bariatric nurses as part of your aftercare package with us. Life after weight loss surgery can result in a happier and healthier lifestyle with many of our patients reporting overall wellbeing improvements. But you will need to make dietary changes to reach your long-term weight loss goals and improve your health.

You will be advised to follow a specific diet to prepare for the surgery itself. Following the surgery, you will be advised to consume liquids only for 2-4 weeks followed by, depending on the procedure, pureed food for 1-2 weeks and soft food for 1-2 weeks before eventually progressing back onto solid foods.

Recovery time can take between 1 to 8 weeks, depending on the procedure you choose. During your recovery period, some patients experience significant weight loss and you may find that obesity-related health problems may have already improved.

It’s important to remember that weight-loss surgery is a helping hand and a tool to make sticking to a healthy eating plan easier rather than a quick fix. You’ll need to remain fully committed over the long term to successfully improve your health.

Risks of weight loss surgery

Like with any kind of surgery, weight loss surgery carries some risks. Some of the complications can happen immediately after surgery but some might occur a while after.

· Gastric band slipping out of place
· Blood clots
· Wound infection
· Stomach leak
· Stomach obstruction
· Malnutrition
· Internal hernias
· Gallstones
· Sagging of skin
· Digestion issues

Many of the risks are low, but it’s important to be aware of them. Your weight loss expert (a bariatric nurse, dietitians or surgeon) will talk to you about them in more detail during your consultation and prior to the surgery.

Liposuction is generally suitable for patients who have stubborn areas of fat that are resistant to diet or exercise, but it does not contribute to overall weight loss. Whereas weight loss surgery is a long-term weight loss solution, when conventional dieting and exercise methods have not been successful, weight loss surgery could help in achieving your health and weight loss goals.
