“I was fortunate my weight never had a direct impact on my life in regards to self-esteem, making friends or health wise, but it had always been a niggling burden when it came to buying new clothes resulting in me never feeling as confident as I would have liked too.
“In 2012 I had lost 5 stone over a period of 2 years. In 2015 the weight had all returned and then some. I had considered weight loss surgery but it had never been something that I had looked into or researched fully.
It was after a conversation with a friend and colleague at work about cosmetic and weight-loss surgery that led Stuart to take things to the next step.
“My colleague had mentioned that her mum was a nurse at Dolan Park and explained what procedures and treatments they did there. I was intrigued and so I went off and began researching the pros and cons to weight loss surgery. I continued to think about it and after some time considering it, I spoke to my friend again and we decided there and then I would ring The Hospital Group to book a consultation.
“My journey with The Hospital Group was a smooth process and one I can highly recommend. I went to Dolan Park Hospital for my initial consultation and met with Sally Price and gastric bypass surgeon Mr Richardson, who were both extremely informative and polite. They took into consideration my lifestyle and gave me professional and in-depth advice on the procedure, prices and aftercare. When I left I felt sure of what the procedure entailed and the work I had to put in to prepare for the surgery.
“On the day of the surgery and after a hard two weeks pre-op diet, I went to Dolan Park and was greeted by the nurses, the anaesthetist and my surgeon Mr Richardson. I was treated with utmost respect and dignity, and the nurses couldn’t be more helpful. I felt comfortable when going into surgery and was reassured at every step.
“During my aftercare, the nurses were very tentative and caring and couldn’t do enough to keep me as pain-free and as comfortable as possible. The months after the surgery I had constant contact with a dietician and knew that if there were any questions I required answers for, they were on the other end of the phone.
“I have lost 6 stone in the year since my surgery and it has made such an impact on my fitness levels. I quit smoking in the 2 weeks leading up to the surgery and have not smoked since. My health has improved greatly, my skin is clearer and I have much more energy.
If Stuart could give one piece of advice to anyone thinking about having weight loss surgery, it would always be research, and lots of it! He had spent about a year researching gastric bypass surgery and knew exactly what the procedure entailed, the price, what the average results were in regard to overall weight-loss and what to expect.
“My advice to someone would be to always listen to your gut instinct. If you want to pursue it and you feel you have researched it fully, and it’s what you want, go for it!
“The staff at The Hospital Group are there to give you advice and have extensive knowledge about all procedures available. Remember not to believe everything you read on the internet and do research on viable websites, blogs or social media platforms.
