Do you know your Mastopexy from your Rhinoplasty…?

If you are at the start of your journey and are considering cosmetic or weight loss surgery, we can’t emphasise enough how important it is to do your research.

But sometimes it can be difficult to know where to begin especially given the amount of information that exists, not to mention a plethora of medical terms and jargon.

 

So get to know us with our handy A-Z of commonly used terminology…

A is for…

Abdominoplasty – or a ‘tummy tuck’ is designed to remove surplus skin and fat deposits to help tighten the stomach area.

Aftercare – perhaps the most important ‘A!’ all of our cosmetic surgery procedures come with 3 years of aftercare as standard which can be extended to 6 years for your complete peace of mind.

Augmentation mammaplasty – otherwise known as a ‘boob job’ or breast enlargement, involves changing the aesthetic appearance of the breasts by increasing their size using implants.


B is for…

BandBoozled – is a partner of The Hospital Group. It is an online slimming club that is just for gastric band patients full of advice, support and guidance to help and motivate those on their weight loss journey following a lap band.

Bariatric surgery – is the traditional term for weight loss surgery. Here at The Hospital Group, we offer gastric band, bypass and sleeve.

Blepharoplasty – or ‘eyebag surgery’ move the excess skin beneath the eyes for a rejuvenated look that can open up the eyes and reduce the signs of ageing.

Body contouring – covers a range of procedures designed to remove excess skin and to lift and reshape the body. We can offer a bespoke body contouring package that may combine procedures such as a tummy tuck, arm lift, thigh lift, buttock lift and breast uplift.

Breast augmentation – or a breast enlargement adds volume to the breasts, making them larger by inserting breast implants.

 

C is for…

Consultation – this is the first stage in your cosmetic surgery or weight loss journey and involves meeting with a surgeon and patient advisor to discuss the procedure you are interested in further. We offer consultations free of charge to give you an opportunity to ask questions, find out more so you can make a knowledgeable and informed decision.

Conversion surgery - involves swapping a gastric band for a gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy. The gastric band is removed completely, and the bypass or gastrectomy is then completed immediately afterwards.

 

D is for…

Deviated septum – is when your nasal septum appears crooked and can cause breathing difficulties. A deviated septum can be straightened with a septoplasty corrective procedure.

E is for…

F is for…

Fleur de lys – is a type of tummy tuck that is popular with our weight loss patients especially if they have reached their goal weight following surgery but have excess skin. A fleur de lys abdominoplasty can reshape your abdomen to give you a flatter, smoother profile.

 

G is for…

GMC – stands for the General Medical Council. All surgeons which hold ‘practising privileges’ here at The Hospital Group are GMC-registered.

Gynecomastia – otherwise known as male chest reduction is designed to achieve fat removal and gland removal in the chest area. It involves liposuction to remove excess fat and the removal of excess skin to create a smoother, more toned chest profile.

 

H is for…

Hoodectonomy – often called labia reduction or labiaplasty, is a procedure that can correct and define the appearance of the inner labia.

I is for…

Implants – come in different shapes and sizes! Here at The Hospital Group, we use industry-leading suppliers Motiva and Implants, they can be round or teardrop shaped and placed either under or over the muscle depending on the look you are hoping to achieve.

Inverted nipples – can be corrected with nipple correction surgery to improve the appearance of nipple problems and may also help to ease any discomfort or embarrassment caused by your nipples.

 

L is for…

Labiaplasty – often called labia reduction or hoodectomy, is a procedure that can correct and define the appearance of the inner labia.

Lipolasty – or liposuction is a surgical procedure that is designed to achieve fat removal and body contouring. It’s one of our most popular cosmetic surgery procedures for patients who are looking for fat loss from various parts of the face and body, including the chin, stomach, buttocks and thighs.

 

M is for…

N is for…

Non-surgical – often referred to as medical aesthetics, this is a non-invasive treatment that does not involve general anaesthesia. At The Hospital Group, we offer non-surgical body contouring treatment SculpSure which is designed to reduce stubborn fat in problem areas such as the abdomen and the love handles.

 

O is for… 

Otoplasty – or ear correction surgery can help by removing or reshaping the cartilage to ‘pin back’ the ears or change their shape or size to suit your facial proportions.

Over the muscle – refers to placing the breast implant in front of your breast muscle, which means it’s more superficial and sits just below the breast tissue. This might be the best option for you if you have some breast tissue already or if you’re restoring fullness to deflated breasts.

 

P is for…

Patient Advisor – you will meet with your PA in your initial consultation and they will be with you throughout your cosmetic surgery journey and is there to offer you support and guidance.

R is for…

Reduction mammoplasty – is breast reduction surgery and is a way of reducing the size and weight of the breasts.

Rhinoplasty – or a ‘nose job’ is a very popular cosmetic surgery procedure which reshapes of the nose can alter the balance and proportions of the whole face.

Rhytidectomy – or as it is more commonly known, a face lift. It is a cosmetic procedure that can help to tighten skin on your face and jawline to rejuvenate your appearance and create a more youthful look.

Riverside – is the name of our London cosmetic surgery hospital located just twenty minutes from central London.

 

S is for…

SculpSure – is a non-surgical body contouring treatment which is designed to reduce stubborn fat in problem areas such as the abdomen and the love handles.

Sleeve gastrectomy – also known as a gastric sleeve is a weight loss procedure which reduces the size and capacity of the stomach by about 75% and includes removing the upper part of the stomach where the chemical that stimulates appetite (ghrelin) is produced.

 

U is for...

Under the muscle implants - refers to an implant that sits behind the breast muscle. This is suitable for women with very small breasts who have very little breast tissue. This method reduces the likelihood of your breast implants showing and gives a more natural looking result but it’s more difficult to place larger implants this way.

 

V is for…

Vaser liposuction – uses state-of-the-art ultrasonic technology to achieve fat removal and body contouring. It is minimally invasive and doesn’t require a general anaesthetic and is becoming a popular choice with patients due to the reduced downtime.

 

W is for…
