When you’re deciding whether to have surgery, it’s reassuring to have all the facts. You’ll be able to ask any questions at your consultation, but here are some that our patients most frequently ask.
Tummy tuck surgery is suitable for patients who want to eliminate excess skin as a result of pregnancy or weight loss, along with muscle tightening in the stomach area. The surgery is not in itself a means of losing weight – diet and exercise are the best way to remove unwanted fat. If diet and exercise has not enabled you to reach your target weight, and you have a BMI over 30, bariatric surgery may be a suitable procedure for you. Your surgeon will advise you which form of surgery is most suitable for you.
Tummy tuck surgery usually takes 2-3 hours under general anaesthetic.
Following the procedure, patients usually need to stay in hospital for two nights.
Yes. An incision is generally made from one hip to the other along the bikini line, which could later be covered by underwear. The scar can stretch from one side of the lower abdomen to the other depending on the size of the stomach. All scars take time to soften and fade, and this can take up to a year.
You’ll need to wear an appropriate post-surgical compression garment to aid healing. The specialist 3-panel abdominal binder can be purchased at Dolan Park Hospital, where your surgery will take place, or at selected clinics. The three panels of the binder apply the correct pressure to the abdominal area, which stops fluid building up, prevents swelling and reduces bleeding. The binder is fastened with Velcro to allow easy adjustment. Abdominoplasty patients need to wear this binder for six weeks. You will be discharged in one of these post-surgery, however due to the length of time the garment needs to be worn patients often feel that it is better to replace the garment.
We want you to make a fully informed decision before you go ahead with surgery, so we offer a private consultation at your local clinic free of charge. At your consultation, you’ll meet with a cosmetic surgeon to discuss the body reshaping options available and whether tummy tuck surgery is the most suitable procedure for your needs. You’ll be able to ask questions about all aspects of the surgery, from muscle placation and aftercare to the results you can expect. You’ll also meet your patient care coordinator, who will be with you every step of the journey. They will give you a personal quotation of costs and information about finance options, the expected timescale, our surgical facilities and door-to-door transport services.
At your consultation, you can book your surgery if you feel ready, but there’s no obligation to go ahead. Cosmetic surgery is a big step and you may want to take time to do more research and think about your decision. We’ll give you a patient information booklet, which provides comprehensive information on your procedure and aftercare. This is an important resource and we require patients to read the detailed information it contains. You’ll also find lots of helpful information here on our website – you can read about our surgeons’ qualifications, THG’s cosmetic surgery expertise and inspiring stories from some of our patients. Our patient care coordinators are available to discuss any concerns you may have. And when you feel ready, they can book you in for your procedure. We also have a 14-day ‘cooling off’ period in place, which means that if you change your mind about the procedure after booking within that period, you will not be charged.
On the day of your surgery, your medical team will make your experience as comfortable as possible and you’ll meet your surgeon again before the procedure. Tummy tuck surgery involves making incisions around the abdominal area. Surplus skin and fat deposits are removed and if necessary muscles will also be tightened to leave a flatter stomach profile. Tummy tuck surgery usually takes 2-3 hours under general anaesthetic.
We’ll be here throughout the recovery process to help you recuperate quickly. For tummy tuck surgery you’ll need to stay in the hospital where your surgery has taken place for two nights following your procedure. Each patient is given a personalised care plan, developed with the advice of their surgeon. All THG hospitals are equipped to the highest standards of clinical care and patient comfort. Following your surgery, you’ll be fitted with an abdominal binder (compression garment), which you’ll need to wear for the first six weeks of healing. We also recommend that you take a couple of weeks off normal activities to recover.
At THG, we offer a full package of aftercare support with all our cosmetic surgery procedures to give you complete peace of mind. You’ll benefit from the following aftercare: Unlimited post-op appointments with a member of our clinical team whenever you need them Surgical cover for 3 years – revision surgery where clinically indicated Additional days’ stay in hospital where needed Additional medication and dressings at no extra cost Emergency telephone support, which you can use at any time
