Our lip lift surgery can raise the position of the upper lip, which can make the upper lip appear fuller and the area between the nose and lips shorter. Lip lift surgery is most suitable for patients who have a thin upper lip and/or a long distance between the nose and upper lip. The procedure can improve the upper lip shape and facial proportions.
Lip reduction surgery can help correct a large, voluminous lip size. This procedure is most suitable for patients who have naturally large or asymmetrical lips, or who have excessive lip volume due to lip augmentation with permanent fillers.

Gummy smile correction surgery is most suitable for patients whose upper lip elevates too far above their teeth when they smile, exposing an excessive area of the upper gums.
Lip surgery normally takes around 1 hour under local or general anaesthetic.
We want you to make a fully informed decision before you go ahead with surgery, so we offer a private consultation at your local clinic free of charge. At your consultation, you’ll meet with a cosmetic surgeon to discuss the lip surgery options available and which procedure is the most suitable for your needs. You’ll be able to ask questions about all aspects of the surgery, from lip size and shape to aftercare and the results you can expect. You’ll also meet your patient care coordinator, who will be with you every step of the journey. They will give you a personal quotation of costs and information about finance options, the expected timescale, our surgical facilities and door-to-door transport services.
At your consultation, you can book your surgery if you feel ready, but there’s no obligation to go ahead. Cosmetic surgery is a big step and you may want to take time to do more research and think about your decision. We’ll give you a patient information booklet, which provides comprehensive information on your procedure and aftercare. This is an important resource and we require patients to read the detailed information it contains. You’ll also find lots of helpful information here on our website – you can read about our surgeons’ qualifications, THG’s cosmetic surgery expertise and inspiring stories from some of our patients. Our patient care coordinators are available to discuss any concerns you may have. And when you feel ready, they can book you in for your procedure. We also have a 14-day ‘cooling off’ period in place, which means that if you change your mind about the procedure after booking within that period, you will not be charged.
On the day of your surgery, your medical team will make your experience as comfortable as possible and you’ll meet your surgeon again before the procedure.
Lip lift surgery
This involves making an incision in the curvature of the lower part of the nose. Excess skin and muscle is then removed from the tissue above the upper lip just beneath the nose. The procedure takes around 1 hour, and is performed under local or general anaesthetic.
Lip reduction surgery
This involves making incisions inside the lips which are used to remove underlying tissues and skin. The incisions are then closed up using dissolvable stitches leaving no visible scars. Typically, lip reduction surgery procedures are performed while the patient is under IV sedation and usually take between 20 and 40 minutes per lip, depending on the extent and cause of the problem. In general it takes a few weeks for the swelling to settle down. In some cases it might take between 6 to 8 weeks to see the final results.
Gummy smile correction
There are 3 techniques that can be performed when having a gummy smile correction, depending on what you are trying to achieve.
1. Lowering upper lip or repositioning of the upper lip – This lip reposition procedure consists of two incisions, one at the mucogengival junction and another in the vestibule. Those incisions are connected laterally, the mucosa is removed and the lip is lowered to the new position. This procedure would lower the upper lip and improve the gummy smile giving a fuller appearance to the upper lip. This technique would be performed to solely reposition the upper lip or in combination with gengivoplasty
2. Gingivoplasty – This crown lengthening procedure consists of removing excess gingiva from the upper part to the teeth. This procedure alone can lengthen the teeth by 1 mm and can improve very mild cases of gummy smile.
3. Maxillary reduction surgery/orthognatic surgery - This procedure is usually chosen for severe cases only and will take place under general anaesthetic. Maybe it has not been possible to correct your teeth and how they bite together with orthodontics alone. This is because the bones of your face and jaws are out of balance with one another. Surgery will change the relationship of your upper jaw to the lower jaw and will correct these problems. An incision is made in the gum above the teeth in the upper jaw. There are no incisions made on the face. A cut is made through the gum above your upper teeth to gain access to the jawbone. The upper jaw is then cut to allow it to be broken in a controlled manner. It is then moved into its new position and held in place with small metal plates and screws. The gum is stitched back into place with dissolvable stitches. These can take a fortnight or even longer to fall out.
We’ll be here throughout the recovery process to help you recuperate quickly. Lip surgery can often be performed as a day case, which means you’ll be able to leave hospital on the same day. However, in some cases, depending on the patient, an overnight stay in hospital may be recommended after the procedure. Each patient is given a personalised care plan, developed with the advice of their surgeon. All THG hospitals are equipped to the highest standards of clinical care and patient comfort.
At THG, we offer a full package of aftercare support with all our cosmetic surgery procedures to give you complete peace of mind. You’ll benefit from the following aftercare: • Unlimited post-op appointments with a member of our clinical team whenever you need them • Surgical cover for 3 years – revision surgery where clinically indicated • Additional days’ stay in hospital where needed • Additional medication and dressings at no extra cost • Emergency telephone support which you can use at any time
