Vaginal Tightening
Giving you control, sensation and confidence
Concerns about the way your vagina feels and functions are surprisingly common, especially after life-changing events such as childbirth, ageing, weight gain and weight loss.
Having children in particular can really change the shape of your vagina and the way it feels. Some women experience specific problems such as lack of sensation/satisfaction during intercourse or even some urinary incontinence - especially when sneezing, laughing or exercising.
Vaginal tightening or pelvic floor tightening is probably the most commonly requested cosmetic gynaecology procedure.
Vaginal Tightening
Surgery to improve the way your vagina looks, feels and functions is relatively straightforward, yet it can have dramatic results in restoring ladies' confidence and self-esteem.
If your vagina feels loose or wide, this is usually due to giving birth to one or several children. It can also be age-related due to a reduction in oestrogen production or else simply the physical shape you were born with.
A wide/loose vagina can really limit sexual pleasure during intercourse for you and your partner, as there is less friction between the penis and the vaginal wall, so sex becomes less satisfying. Another common symptom is trapped water, which can leak out after a bath or a swim.
In addition, when the muscles and ligaments in the vagina become weaker and saggier, this can leave the bladder, bowel and womb (uterus) so unsupported that they can literally begin to push through the vaginal wall. This leads to problems with the body’s ability to pass urine and stools. Even if they only suffer occasional incontinence (e.g. when sneezing) many of our patients are concerned to seek help before things get any worse.
Pelvic floor exercises may improve things, but they are notoriously difficult to do, especially when there is a lack of muscle tone.
The good news is that with vaginal and pelvic floor tightening, the vagina can be restored to normal or as near as possible, so there's no need to worry about sexual intimacy, or rushing to the loo, or even the dreaded incontinence pads.
After surgery, you can expect your vagina to feel tighter, more comfortable and generally better. Sexual intercourse should be more pleasurable for both you and your partner and any problems urinating should be resolved as your organs will be back in their normal position.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Vaginal Tightening Surgery Involve?
Vaginal tightening surgery tightens the stretched tissues and pelvic floor muscles and ligaments. The surgeon will also remove any excess skin to reduce the overall size of the vagina.
The procedure is done under general anaesthetic, so you should expect to spend a night in hospital before recovering at home.
How will I feel after Vaginal Tightening surgery?
You should expect your vagina and the internal and external surrounding area to be quite swollen and sore after surgery. Remember, it is a sensitive area, so walking and sitting may be uncomfortable at first.
You will be given pain relief while in hospital and will also have advice on managing the pain/discomfort when you return home. An ice pack, wrapped in cloth so that it is not too cold, may also give you some relief.
The early recovery stage will pass, but if you have any concerns, you will have 24-7 contact details for our nursing team.
How long is recovery?
You should be able to return to work about 1 week after surgery and expect to be fully recovered in 4 weeks. Abstain from sexual intercourse for 4-8 weeks, depending on your recovery.
