After Weight Loss

The results of weight loss surgery are very dramatic as our patient stories show. However, we do make patients aware from the outset that the reduction in body weight can leave excess/flabby skin which can be unsightly.

In severe cases, diet and exercise are realistically unlikely to achieve the smooth contours that the patient would wish. Therefore cosmetic surgery is the only option to lift and tighten the loose skin and make the most of your body transformation.

Many of our weight loss patients go on to have cosmetic surgery to improve their bodies after weight loss. It's a good problem to have, as it indicates just how far they have come with their weight loss.

Patient Story - Julie Stansfield:

Julie Stansfield, pictured, is just one of our weight loss patients. After steadily gaining weight over a period of years, she had concerns about her health and opted for a gastric bypass. She lost 9 stone in a year and was healthier and happier. However, she was not happy with the loose skin which was ageing, unattractive and awkward under clothing. First of all, she had a tummy tuck to deal with the excess skin around her middle from losing so much weight.

She was delighted with the results, so then opted for a breast uplift as weight loss had left her with saggy, empty-looking breasts.

Cosmetic surgery completed Julie's transformation from morbid obesity to achieve the stunning shape you can see in this photo.

She shares her story in this video interview, which was filmed at The Hospital Group after her tummy tuck procedure.

Post-Bariatric Cosmetic Surgery Procedures

Popular procedures for patients who have lost significant amounts of weight include:

  • Breast uplift - this procedure removes excess skin from each breast to lift the bustline, giving much perter profile to the breasts. In some cases, this can be combined with the use of carefully selected breast implants where the breasts needs extra volume to be restored
  • Tummy tuck - This operation involves careful incisions to remove surplus skin and fat deposits. The results are very striking. Patients who have lost a lot of weight describe how liberating it is to lose the excess skin too and how helpful to their confidence
  • Arm lift - this procedure removes the excess or flabby skin left with dramatic weight loss. In weight loss patients, the effects of "bingo wings" can be extreme. The Hospital Group performed arm lift surgery on an Embarrassing Bodies patient who had lost 13 stone, but been left with enormous amounts of excess skin

Other treatments include:

  • Body lift - removing sections of excess tissue around the torso in a much bigger area than could be accomplished with a tummy tuck. There are a number of body lift techniques and procedures as requirements here do vary according to the individual
  • Buttock lift - excess skin on the bottom can be really unattractive and is resistant to treatment with exercise or creams. The excess skin can be carefully removed and any stubborn areas of fat liposculptured away to produce a lean, smooth and shapely silhouette
  • Thigh lift - like the buttocks and arms, excess skin on the thighs is particularly unattractive as it is out of proportion with the rest of the body. Precise surgical skill is required to tackle this delicate area

If you have lost significant weight, then it may be a bespoke programme of surgeries to deal with the excess skin and give you the lean, smooth silhouette you deserve to show off your new shape.

The Hospital Group is the UK's leading weight loss surgery provider and one of the top 3 in cosmetic surgery. We've carried out many "total makeovers" and understand the requirements very well, so you're in safe hands. Our cosmetic surgeons work closely with our bariatric surgery team and therefore understand the requirements of weight loss patients quite uniquely. They are able to offer the full range of post-bariatric surgery procedures for patients who have lost a lot of weight.

Many of our Patient Care Coordinators have lost weight themselves with The Hospital Group and gone on to have cosmetic surgery. Like Julie, they can talk to you about their stories and share photos.

Cosmetic surgery can be booked at the same time as weight loss surgery as an incentive/reward for your achievements, or can be considered once the weight is lost. Your Weight Loss Patient Care Coordinator will be happy to advise.
