Male Pattern Baldness

A Common Phenomenon

If you are suffering from hair loss, you are certainly not alone.  Most men are showing some signs of baldness by their early 60s.  However, it can begin at virtually any age from late teens onwards.  Research has shown that around one third of 30 year olds have male-pattern baldness, while the statistic increases to 50% for those in their 50s.  It can take up to 25 years to go bald, but for others hair loss can occur entirely within a timeframe of five years.

Many of our patients are in their 30s or even 20s, refusing to accept the situation and taking action in the form of hair loss treatment.

An Emotional Experience

The gradual or more sudden loss of hair can be a very emotional experience for any man. The effects of hair loss can cause irritation, anxiety or even suicidal depression. This is compounded by feelings of helplessness if there is no solution available.

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)

Here we show the effects that the male hormone DHT have on hair follicles. In Fig1 a genetic time switch causes hair cells to become sensitive to DHT. Fig 2 shows the deterioration of the hair follicles internal structure causing shedding of hair and baldness.

The stages of Male Pattern Baldness (MPB)

The reasons for MPB are attributed to the male hormone Dihydrotestosterone circulating in your body and the genetic sensitivity to that hormone.  At any time after the age of fifteen, DHT can turn on the genetic switch that causes hair loss to start.

MPB(1)STAGE 1 - Male Pattern Baldness

The first tell tale signs of the onset of Male Pattern Baldness is when frontal recessions begin to appear in the hairline.

MPB(2)STAGE 2 - Male Pattern Baldness

Over time these recessions become larger and much more noticeable, and the hairline moves further back.

MPB(3)STAGE 3 - Male Pattern Baldness

At the same time as the recessions taking place, a thinning area may also appear on the crown and will gradually increase in size.

MPB(4)STAGE 4 - Male Pattern Baldness

The final stage of Male Pattern Baldness is when the hair is lost completely from the crown and frontal region, and leaving the familiar horse shoe shape.

What to do About It?product_Cover Up

There are products available to disguise the early effects of Male Pattern Baldness.  See our online shop for details of our Cover-Up range, available in a variety of 6 colours to match your own colouring.  Prescription drugs and non-surgical treatments are also available which can be effective in slowing and reversing the hair loss.

However, hair transplant surgery is the only way to correct hair loss using your own hair. The hair on the back and sides of the head, is immune to the effects of DHT and it is also usually thicker, stronger and more densely packed. Therefore when the hair from this area is removed to a balding or thinning area it retains its own genetic characteristics and will grow naturally, as it did in its original location, for life.
