Gastric Banding Surgery

Before Gastric Band Surgery / Gastric Band Operation

Prior to gastric band surgery a Weight Loss Surgery Consultation is arranged to discuss what a gastric band is, its suitability for you, and any other Weight Loss Surgery options. Suitable patients are then advised on how to prepare for gastric band surgery including any changes to lifestyle and a possible pre-gastric band diet.

The Gastric Band Surgery / Gastric Band Operation

An overnight stay will be required for a gastric band operation as a general anaesthetic is needed. And as with any operation you will need to fast before hand.

On the day of the gastric band surgery you will be greeted by a Nurse in Reception who will take you to your room. The Doctor will do some routine health checks and the Bariatric Surgeon will have a discussion with you about the gastric band operation before you sign the Consent Form. The Anaesthetist will also attend you. To prevent any blood clots during the gastric banding surgery, you may be asked to put on compression stockings and you may receive anti-clotting medicine to help prevent blood clots forming in the veins in your legs.

A gastric band can be fitted in an hour using laparoscopic surgery (keyhole). During the gastric banding a number of small incisions are made to the upper stomach area. Guided by a laparoscope (a long, thin, telescope with a camera and light), instruments are then used to place the gastric band. An access port (just under the skin) is then connected to the gastric band which allows saline gastric band adjustments to control future weight loss. Stitches or clips will then be used to close the incisions.

After Gastric Band Surgery / Gastric Band Operation

After the gastric band surgery fluid will be provided by a drip for a short period. You will feel drowsy and as the anaesthetic wears off you may need some pain medication. Movement as soon as possible will be encouraged though to avoid any blood clots.

After your over night stay you will be given a post gastric band diet to follow as major changes to your diet will be required beginning with liquids only and then purees. Vitamin supplements may also be recommended. The Nurse will advise on caring for your wounds and any pain management associated with gastric band surgery.  She will also provide a follow up gastric band operation appointment.

Gastric Band recovery time is usually quite quick thanks to ‘key hole’ (Laparoscopic) surgery. Read more about Gastric Band Aftercare.
