Bariatric Surgery a Diabetes Cure

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form and is often linked to being very overweight (obese) - 90% of all patients with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese.  Losing weight can greatly improve or cure the symptoms of type 2 diabetes, but many people have difficulty slimming down with diet and exercise alone.

As obesity-induced type 2 diabetes mellitus continues to increase worldwide, medical research indicates that surgery to reduce obesity can completely eliminate all manifestations of diabetes.

Latest research shows that following bariatric surgery, 78% of diabetic patients had complete resolution of their diabetes and 87% saw either a complete cure or improvement.

The LAP-BAND™ is now officially endorsed for aiding improvement or remission of type 2 diabetes through weight loss surgery. This follows clinical studies in 2008 which showed that weight loss surgery with the gastric band led to improvement or remission of type 2 diabetes in the majority of obese patients recently diagnosed with the condition.  This was the first randomised controlled study comparing the impact on type 2 diabetes of weight loss surgery vs conventional weight loss therapies.  After 2 years the LAP-BAND™ group displayed 5 times higher diabetes remission rate vs the non-surgical weight loss group.

The American Journal of Medicine

There have been numerous papers over the years documenting the benefits to type 2 diabetics of bariatric surgery, but in a study published in the March 2009 issue of The American Journal of Medicine, investigators analyzed a total 621 studies from 1990 to April of 2006, which showed that 78.1% of diabetic patients had complete resolution and diabetes was improved or resolved in 86.6% of patients as the result of bariatric surgery.

In addition, the weight loss across all the studies gave an average weight loss of 38.5 kg (just over 6 stone, or 85 lb).  That equated to 55.9% excess body weight loss.

Diabetes in the UK

Due to our expanding waistlines, the UK is seeing the rate of diabetes soar, putting extra pressure on the NHS.  Statistics show an incredible 74 per cent increase in diabetes between 1997 and 2003.  This is even faster than in the USA or Canada.

The Hospital Group is the UK leader in obesity surgery and many of our patients have seen their type 2 diabetes simply disappear as a result of surgery.

Weight Loss Surgery

To work efficiently, your body needs the energy that comes from food.

When you eat the same amount of food that your body needs, your weight stays the same.  If you get more energy from your food than you need, some is left over.  Your body stores that extra energy as fatty tissue and if your body never uses the extra fat, you will gain weight.

Causes of Obesity

There are many things that can lead to obesity and morbid obesity, including:

  • Metabolic disorders - changes in metabolism may affect your energy balance and your weight

  • Genetic factors - if others in your family are obese, then you have a higher risk of obesity

  • Bad eating habits - unbalanced diet and/or snacking between meals

  • Psychological factors - social or emotional eating is one of the main causes of weight-gain

  • Medical/health problems

Gastric Band

This is our most popular procedure.  The Gastric Band is an inflatable silicone plastic ring that is placed around the upper part of the stomach to control the amount of food that passes into the digestive tract and enables you to feel full sooner and for longer.

It is adjustable and reversible.  Read more details on our Gastric Band page.

Gastric Bypass

There are several varieties of bypass, but all involve the creation of a small stomach pouch to restrict food intake and bypasses of the duodenum and other segments of the small intestine to reduce the absorption of calories and nutrients from food.

Gastric Balloon Programme

The Balloon is a soft, silicone sack that is inserted into the stomach and filled with sterile saline.  With the balloon in place, you will have a feeling of fullness and reduced hunger, which will help you to kick-start your weight loss.  The balloon stays in place for just 6 months to help you to adopt the diet and lifestyle changes needed to continue the weightloss.
