Breast Implant Removal or Replacement

If you already have implants, you may for a number of reasons be seeking to change or remove them.  For example:

  • Wish you'd gone bigger!

  • Want a different shape e.g. more natural, more or less cleavage

  • Want to go smaller again, perhaps due to change in weight, body shape or ageing

Breast implant technology has advanced rapidly and the latest options give more choice than ever before, so you can achieve just the look you want.  It's not wrong to seek further procedures to refine your shape after a few years.

Breast Re-Augmentation (Implant Replacement)

Don't let the celebrity extremes put you off... While certain celebrities seem to have a boob job almost every year with size and shape increasing and decreasing each time, there's no reason to be put off if you want to change your look.

  • You may feel your breasts look too "fake" and prefer a more naturally full look

  • For other women, it is an opportunity to increase the size - perhaps they loved their first breast augmentation, but regretted being cautious on the size

  • If your implants look too high or low or have rippled, then you may be considering a replacement to get the look you want

  • If you have lost or gained weight, or simply had implants for 10-15 years and your body has changed, then you may be seeking replacement implants to keep your shape/size

Having had one breast augmentation, a re-augmentation (i.e. implant removal and replacement) is generally more straightforward than the previous operation as the "pocket" or "capsule" for the implant is already there.  Your surgeon can advise on the likely outcome of the operation and what sort of recovery experience you should expect

Breast Implant Removal

While the majority of women tend to seek a replacement of their implants, you can opt to have them removed altogether.  It's a very personal decision and one that only you can make.  However, our expert cosmetic surgeons will be happy to give you all the professional advice you need.

"Problem" Implants

It is important to state that this is relatively rare, especially with the latest new implants.  However, if you have suffered problems with your implants, you may choose or need to have them removed.  This could include:

  • Leaky / ruptured implants

  • Capsular contracture (also known as encapsulation), where the implant can feel hard and painful due to the formation of excess scar tissue around the implant as the body's immunity response around the implant.  It may also look a strange shape

The Implant Replacement / Removal Procedure

As with the original breast augmentation, the procedure is normally carried out under General Anaesthetic and involves an overnight stay.

Breast re-augmentation (i.e. implant replacement) is usually quite straightforward and less painful than the first procedure as the pocket is already there, although you should certainly expect some discomfort.

If implants are removed and not replaced, then pain is generally minimal.  However, if the implants and capsules (i.e. scar tissue around the old implant) are removed, then you should expect pain similar to the original procedure. If only the implants are removed, then pain is generally minimal.  However, if the capsules (i.e. scar tissue around the old implant) are also removed, then you should expect pain similar to the original procedure.

Response to the procedures in terms of pain does vary.

Breast Enlargement - if you have small breasts they may not appear in proportion with your size or offer the fashion options that enhance your figure.  Even if you are happy with your size and shape, it's hard to keep the same figure through the years.  Breast implants can help create the ideal size, shape and feel for a more confident, feminine you

Breast Uplift- many women seek this procedure after pregnancy, breast-feeding, weight loss or simply the ageing process, where the breasts sag and lose volume.  A mastopexy is a common choice to create a more youthful profile.  It can be combined with implants where more volume is also required.

Breast Reduction large breasts can cause significant discomfort as well as self-consciousness for some woment.  A breast reduction can provide a better proportioned bust which can relieve back-pain/shoulder-pain and create a shape you are happier with.
