The Daily Mirror shared stunning before and after photos today after Jason Gardiner’s dramatic new hair transplant was revealed on Dancing on Ice final night.

Like many men, Jason’s hair loss had affected him profoundly, causing depression and self-hatred. He said “I was ashamed of myself. I couldn’t be intimate with people. It was a nightmare.”

The hair transplant carefully grafted Jason’s own hair from the back of his head to the front and the top. It can take up to a year for the hair to re-grow, which is why Jason has been wearing a variety of caps and hats since last summer. However, his hair is now fully growing again and Jason was proud to bin the hat with a flourish on This Morning today.

His hair transplant story was dramatically revealed in the News of the World the day of the final show in a double page exclusive article featuring the first photos of Jason with his new hair.

Jason Gardiner resented the effects of male pattern baldness. He tried a “stick-on-wig” a couple of years ago, but it only made him even more depressed. “I had a hair rug which is someone else’s hair which they fuse to your head. It’s barbaric.” Jason suffered pain and a nasty reaction before finally removing the hair piece and shaving his head.

“After shaving off my hair for the first time I couldn’t look at myself in the mirror for 6 months” he said. “I had hair envy.”

Jason researched the surgical options and after meeting with The Hospital Group in their London offices, opted to have a hair transplant with Beverly Hills based hair transplant surgeon Dr. Craig Ziering.

Jason describes the process of his follicular unit hair transplant “You have your recipient sites on top where you’re bald. And then you have your hairy donor site where they cut a strip out the back of the head.” During the painstaking transplant process, 3,501 individual grafts were dissected from the “donor strip” and carefully transplanted to the top of Jason’s head. “Afterwards I had no bruising. In ten days you wouldn’t have known I had anything except a small scar at the back of my head”. The NOTW had overstated the cost of this procedure, in the UK hair transplantation starts in the region of £3,500.

The transplant took place last summer, but to avoid premature criticism, Jason kept it under his hat. After transplantation, the hair is dormant for a few months before growing again. It will then grow normally for life. Jason explained “You don’t see any growth for between six and seven months. My new hair only started coming through in January. But eventually – and it is almost overnight – you can actually feel it growing”.

Jason shocked the Dancing on Ice crowd with his unveiling after Laura Hamilton’s dance, saying: “Laura I have to say I take my hat off to you – incredible!” as he removed his hat with a flourish.

Surprised co-host Holly Willoughby gasped afterwards: ‘I’m almost speechless about what was under the hat!’

He told his 60,000 Twitter followers: “I will have a second one in order to get back all the hair I lost. The medical technology these days is just remarkable! It is quite miraculous what they can do these days. Dr Ziering is a genius! x Thank you I’m very happy with the results.”

Jason’s hair transplant was performed by Dr. Craig Ziering in Beverly Hills. Dr. Ziering is a world-leading authority on hair loss and hair transplantation. He has over 20 years experience in the industry, and has performed over 15,000 procedures.

Ziering Medical offer hair transplant procedures in the UK and free consultations at our nationwide clinics. Surgical procedures are performed near Birmingham and in Hammersmith.

One reader had suffered hair loss as a result of a bleaching disaster. She had considered a hair transplant and is currently wearing extensions to cover the bald fringe area.

She tried Viviscal hair loss supplement and noticed an improvement in the quality of hair at the back of her head, though it hasn’t encouraged any regrowth in the bald area at the front.

It can take between 3-12 months for hair to grow back in moderate cases, but if the pulling continues, the hair will never grow back and the only option is a hair transplant.

She shared her story with the Daily Mail today.

Dr Peter Williams, hair transplant surgeon at The Hospital Group, was invited to comment. He said “With women, there are lots of different reasons, but with men, hair loss tends to be inherited.

Women tend to get thinner hair all over because as they age, they have less oestrogen circulating and this means they not only grow less hair but it becomes thinner too.

“You should check for low iron, thyroid problems, autoimmune conditions – all of which can cause hair loss. Often these issues can then be treated.”

The Hospital Group offers FREE consultations with hair experts and a range of treatments including drug therapy, cover-up spray and hair transplant. The Hospital Group is the UK’s leading provider of hair transplantation procedures.

Changing lifestyles mean that work stress, increased alcohol intake, and poor diet – risk factors for many diseases – are taking their toll on countless thousands of women, too.

Receding hairline and thinning hair are becoming increasingly common in women, says hair transplant surgeon Dr Peter Williams from The Hospital group citing stress and low oestrogen, particularly as women go through the menopause, as possible causes of female hair loss.

The rise could also be related to environmental factors.

Warning signs: Hair becoming increasingly frail and wispy; bald patches.

Treatment: ‘The most important thing is to establish whether your hair loss has a medical cause and if so, to get that treated,’ says Dr Peter Williams. ‘For instance, if your hair loss is related to polycystic ovaries, it should improve once this is treated.

‘There is a very good ointment called Minoxidil that helps with hair loss. It’s thought to work by improving blood supply to hair follicles.

Finally, on a cosmetic front, you can use special coloured sprays such as Coverup which thicken the hair and add colour to wispy strands, or opt for a hair transplant.’
