Daily Mirror: Hair Transplant vs Viviscal

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Daily Mirror hair transplantDaily Mirror readers tested a host of high street options vs clinic.

One reader had suffered hair loss as a result of a bleaching disaster.  She had considered a hair transplant and is currently wearing extensions to cover the bald fringe area.

She tried Viviscal hair loss supplement and noticed an improvement in the quality of hair at the back of her head, though it hasn’t encouraged any regrowth in the bald area at the front.

Daily Mail: Naomi Campbell’s Hair Loss

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

As pictures of Naomi Campbell are released showing hair loss, our hair surgeon Dr Peter Williams is invited to comment.

Dr Williams said “it is very common in people who wear braids and tight buns as well as extensions.”

It is sobering news for those with hair extensions – Paris Hilton, Victoria Beckham and Britney Spears are all said to have suffered the condition.

It can take between 3-12 months for hair to grow back in moderate cases, but if the pulling continues, the hair will never grow back and the only option is a hair transplant.

Daily Mail: Only Fools and Horses Star Sue Holderness Battles Alopecia

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

daily_mail_hair_lossAt the age of 60, actress Sue Holderness (best known as Marlene from Only Fools and Horses) has been plagued with severe hair loss since her 30’s.

She shared her story with the Daily Mail today.

Dr Peter Williams, hair transplant surgeon at The Hospital Group, was invited to comment.  He said “With women, there are lots of different reasons, but with men, hair loss tends to be inherited.

Women tend to get thinner hair all over because as they age, they have less oestrogen circulating and this means they not only grow less hair but it becomes thinner too.

“You should check for low iron, thyroid problems, autoimmune conditions – all of which can cause hair loss.  Often these issues can then be treated.”

The Hospital Group offers FREE consultations with hair experts and a range of treatments including drug therapy, cover-up spray and hair transplant.  The Hospital Group is the UK’s leading provider of hair transplantation procedures.

Daily Mail: Women Getting “Men’s” Diseases?

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

The Daily Mail asks why so many women are getting “men’s” diseases…

Changing lifestyles mean that work stress, increased alcohol intake, and poor diet – risk factors for many diseases – are taking their toll on countless thousands of women, too.

Receding hairline and thinning hair are becoming increasingly common in women, says hair transplant surgeon Dr Peter Williams from The Hospital group citing stress and low oestrogen, particularly as women go through the menopause, as possible causes of female hair loss.

The rise could also be related to environmental factors.

Warning signs: Hair becoming increasingly frail and wispy; bald patches.

Treatment: ‘The most important thing is to establish whether your hair loss has a medical cause and if so, to get that treated,’ says Dr Peter Williams. ‘For instance, if your hair loss is related to polycystic ovaries, it should improve once this is treated.

‘There is a very good ointment called Minoxidil that helps with hair loss. It’s thought to work by improving blood supply to hair follicles.

Finally, on a cosmetic front, you can use special coloured sprays such as Coverup which thicken the hair and add colour to wispy strands, or opt for a hair transplant.’

Independent: Moustaches in Fashion

Monday, November 30th, 2009

After years in the fashion wilderness, the moustache is back in fashion.  Celebrities such as Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp have been seen sporting theirs for some time now.

But some men find that the hair on their face is pretty sparse and not suited to the style.  What are the options?

Dr WilliamsDr Williams, Hair Transplant Surgeon for The Hospital Group suggests Minoxidil to promote hair growth, or else hair transplantation.  Hair transplantation is more commonly used on the scalp, where relocating active hair follicles to the thinner patches is extremely successful – the natural hair continues to grow and the appearance is dramatically restored.  This procedure is known as Follicular Unit Transplantation and is the gold standard in modern natural hair transplantation.
