Male_hair_loss

When an older man gets a big sports car or a fast new motor bike many jokingly see it as a ‘mid-life crisis’ but new research reveals that the crisis is in actual fact a very real condition.

Known as the ‘male menopause’ the condition affects around five million men with symptoms including weight gain, lack of sex drive and mood swings. It is though that a shocking 95 per cent of men are suffering from the condition but don’t even realise it.

But perhaps one of the most worrying symptoms of the condition is hair loss and the occurrence of bald patches due to a lack of testosterone being produced.

For many men the thinning of their hair can be life changing and in some cases lead to bouts of depression as well as feelings of self consciousness and a loss of confidence.

For some men hair loss can start as early as their teenage years but for most it develops in their late twenties or thirties with hair most commonly disappearing from the temples and crown of the head.

A recent survey revealed that hair loss is the second most worried about issue amongst older men. The survey looked at 2,000 men and revealed that 40 per cent of them were anxious and worried about their hair falling out or getting bald patches.

For those that are worried about their hair, The Hospital Group, the UK’s number one hair transplant provider, offers a range of follicular hair techniques.

Leading hair transplant surgeon, Dr Peter Williams from The Hospital Group said: “For both women and men the loss of hair can be a very emotional experience but The Hospital Group can provide expert advice with experienced hair transplant surgeons.

Hair transplants are becoming increasingly popular and the techniques used have advanced substantially. At The Hospital Group only state-of-the-art techniques are used to achieve the best possible results and men and women are now keen to benefit from the amazing results of hair restoration that are on offer.”

Providing expert advice and assistance, The Hospital Group carries out more hair transplantations than any other clinic in the UK, recognising that hair restoration is an art just as much as a surgical procedure.

Since The Hospital Group was established in 1992, it has grown from a small pharmaceutical company to one of the UK’s foremost weight loss surgery and cosmetic surgery providers.

Researchers find gene linked to hair loss

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Male_hair_lossResearchers believe they have found the genetic basis of alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease that attacks hair follicles and causes people to lose their hair.

The findings could make it easier to develop new treatments for the condition, in which loss can range from patches on the scalp to complete absence of hair on the entire body.

Affecting approximately 5.3 million people, Alopecia is the most common autoimmune disease in humans and is second only to male pattern baldness, when it comes to common forms of hair loss.

Dr. Angela Christiano, professor of dermatology and genetics and development at Columbia University Medical Center, who lead the study, said it could lead to the development of new treatments for the condition.

It was originally thought that alopecia was more related to inflammatory diseases, such as psoriasis, where a particular cell attacks the skin. But during their research, Christiano and her investigators learned that alopecia is actually more genetically related to celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis and type 1 diabetes.

The research was conducted using more than 1,000 samples from the National Alopecia Areata Registry, a patient registry for alopecia areata funded by the National Institute for Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases at the National Institutes of Health

Those who want to solve their hair loss woes should come for a consultation with The Hospital group. The Hospital Group only perform natural hair transplants, using the latest follicular hair techniques.

Top Channel 4 Doc Has Hair Transplant Op

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Health and body expert Doctor Christen Jessen has boosted his own self esteem by investing in a hair transplant.

The star of the popular Channel 4 show, Embarrassing Bodies, has opted to thicken the front of his thinning mop of blonde locks using the increasingly favoured technique.

Christian, 33, spent £4,000 having hair taken from the back of his scalp where it’s thick and implanted onto his receding hairline.

The health expert, who wears his locks in a distinctive curtains style, shot to stardom three years ago on Channel 4 show Supersize vs Superskinny.

He now advises patients on treatments to cure a range of delicate problems on Embarrassing Bodies. And he has a GP clinic in Harley Street where he first consulted a neighbouring specialist about his baldness last year.

Christian confessed to the News of the World: “Having talked to patients who had hair transplants on Embarrassing Bodies, I decided the time was right to get it done. I’m delighted with the results”.

Men in the United Kingdom seeking hair restoration can easily achieve a look like Dr Christian.

The Hospital Group, the UKs leading cosmetic surgeons, perform more hair restoration procedures than any other surgery provider, and only carry out natural hair transplants using the latest Follicular Hair Transplantation techniques.

Follicular Transplantation involves transplanting hair units, often with four or five hairs growing from one follicle, to a bald spot to generate growth.

Human hairs are genetically programmed to either be sensitive to the male hormone, which causing them to die, or to be permanently immune to the hormone and last a lifetime. Hair Transplantation uses the ‘lifetime growth’ hairs from around the back of the head, and transplants them in areas where the hairs have died.

Hair or Follicular Transplantation at The Hospital Group is a minor surgical procedure, taking little more than three hours.

The Hospital Group’s hair loss treatment and transplantation clinic was founded in 1992, and is staffed with industry experts at its dedicated Dolan Park Hospital in the Midlands.

Hair Loss Linked To DNA

Monday, April 26th, 2010

A baldness gene has been identified by scientists who now hope to develop a cure for male pattern baldness. Researchers have identified a genetic mutation involved in hypotrichosis simplex, a hereditary hair loss disorder. The disorder causes hair follicle miniaturization, a process in which hair follicles shrink and narrow, and thick hair is replaced by fine, brittle strands of hair.

Researchers say that the same process is also a key component of male pattern baldness.

Dr Angela Christiano, who led the study at Columbia University in New York, said manipulating the gene’s actions “may have an effect on hair follicle growth for the first time in humans”.

Previous research has already linked the gene to other hair loss disorders, but in this study researchers found the mutated gene inhibits a signaling pathway involved in hair growth.

By learning more about this pathway, known as the Wnt pathway, researchers say the discovery may lead to new and improved treatments for male pattern baldness and other hair loss disorders.

For those who are troubled by hair loss The Hospital Group can help. As the UK’s number one provider of hair loss surgery, The Hospital Group carry out more Hair Transplant procedures than anyone else in the UK and can give you the expert help and advice you need.
