PIP implants were withdrawn from the market earlier this year following the discovery that the French manufacturing facility was using a substitute silicone gel to that officially approved between 2001-2009. The Hospital Group have not used PIP implants for some time, having moved to  Allergan Breast Implants last year. However, patients prior to April 2009 are likely to have PIP implants.

The governing body the MHRA has stated “At this time the MHRA does not have evidence of any additional health risks associated with PIP breast implants”.

Investigations into the alternative material used have been delayed in France due to stock being impounded and results are not now expected until mid-September. Due to the prolonged timelines and the concern caused to those women with PIP implants; the MHRA have taken advice from a number of Toxicologists and decided to conduct their own tests in the UK, which should provide an indication as to whether or not there is any problem with the filler.

Where necessary or appropriate, the nurse will then refer you to see a surgeon for assessment – again, this is provided free of charge.  Each case would be assessed individually, but our priority is to ensure the patients’ welfare at all times.  If a clear case of rupture was diagnosed and implant removal were advised, our intention would be to replace the implants at no cost to the patient.
