New research has revealed that a surprising key ingredient in food could be the answer to combating the UK’s obesity problem.
It is believed that adding extracts of seaweed fibres to fast foods will make them healthier. The research was conducted at Newcastle University and began by adding seaweed fibre to bread to see if foods could be developed to aid people trying to lose weight. It is thought if the natural fibre from the seaweed could be added to daily foods – for example bread and yogurt and the result would be that three quarters of fat intake would simply just pass through the body.
Dr Brownlee, who led the research, claims taste tests of the product have been successful.
He said: “Seaweed fibres have been shown in a lab to have some sort of benefit of reducing the digestion rate of fat and carbohydrates,”
Nutritionist Angela Dowden added: “It is not a stand-alone miracle thing. It is perhaps part of the solution, but I wouldn’t let people run away with the idea that it is a definite way to lose weight.”
