A new study has confirmed the link between obesity and asthma, both of which have become more common over the past thirty years.Â
The research looked at nearly 4,500 men and women of which around a third were overweight, and another third were obese. Twelve percent of the obese individuals had asthma, compared to only six percent of those with normal weight. And the likelihood of asthma increased as the body mass index increased.Â
The risk of asthma was more than triple for those who were most obese compared to normal-weight individuals.Â
Some experts suggest that the system-wide, low-grade inflammation that occurs with obesity may be a factor, while others have argued that resistance to the blood-sugar-regulating hormone insulin – which goes up with excess weight – is the reason for the association.Â
David Ross, Chief Executive of The Hospital Group said: “Although the link between asthma and obesity is still not completely understood- this research should prompt anyone to seriously consider changing their lifestyle.Â
“Although a bariatric procedure is not a quick fix- it can lead to dramatic weight loss results and will also encourage a healthier way of life. We see many patients for obesity surgery whose other weight-related conditions, such as asthma, diabetes or hypertension, are reduced or eliminated after weight loss.”Â
Those who come to The Hospital Group, can be assured of a dedicated, professional service, with astounding success rates and a limited waiting time. This latest news is just another reason to seek an effective weight loss solution with The Hospital Group.Â
Since The Hospital Group was established in 1992, it has risen to become the UK’s biggest weight loss surgery providers, performing more gastric band procedures last year than the NHS.Â
