Woman’s Own: The True Cost of our Size 10 Figures

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

3 readers tell the story of their dramatic weight loss in Woman’s Own.

Our own Patient Care Coordinator Julie Stansfield appeared in the piece.  Her gastric bypass transformed her life, giving her a new body and a new career, as she subsequently joined the company to help other overweight patients get into shape with the help of weight loss surgery.

Julie had the operation in May 2008 and over the following year lost 9 stone. She now weighs a skinny 8 stone 6lb.

Julie says “Shrinking from a size 22 to a size 10 has meant for the first time in years I feel confident and sexy.  And now I’ve even got a new career from my new body.  I’ve started advising women who are battling the same issues with food that I had.  It’s great to be helping people to lose weight and I just hope that one day I can help them to feel as fabulous as I do now!”

Marc Jacobs Has A Stylish Hair Transplant

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Fabulous fashion designer Marc Jacobs has revealed that he recently underwent a hair transplant to help replenish his mop of thinning tresses.

The highly successful designer revealed that he had undergone a hair loss procedure in order to cover up his slightly balding head.

Revealing his natural brown hair colour, and not his usual outlandish blue dyed hair in an interview, Marc seemed happy to have had the treatment which gives a more youthful appearance and helps people achieve a fuller head of hair.

Marc said: “I’ve just had a hair transplant. I was starting to thin on top. I can’t dye it for a while so I’ve gone back to my natural hair colour for a while.”

Many other famous names have decided to have hair treatment in a bid to recapture a bountiful head of hair, most recently, Dr Christian Jessen, from Channel 4’s popular Embarrassing Bodies series.

For some men hair loss can start as early as their teenage years but for most it develops in their late twenties or thirties with hair most commonly disappearing from the temples and crown of the head.

Whilst many men appear unfazed with their thinning tresses, some male baldness can cause considerable emotional distress, a lack of self confidence and, in some cases, depression.

Hair Surgeon Dr Peter Williams from The Hospital Group said: “It’s great that such a stylish and fashionable man has opted to make the best of his looks with a hair transplant.

“Substantial advancements have been made and the techniques for hair loss are now highly sophisticated. As a result men and women are now keen to benefit from the amazing results of hair restoration that The Hospital Group can offer.”

Providing expert advice and assistance, The Hospital Group carries out more hair transplantations than any other clinic in the UK, recognising that hair restoration is an art just as much as a surgical procedure.

Obesity Treatment Can Help Cut Risk Of Cancer

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

New research has revealed that nutrition advice and obesity treatment could help reduce the chances of developing cancer.

The study, conducted by New York University, has revealed that obese adults who were overweight from a young age are actually at twice the risk of getting colon cancer compared to adults who have had a consistently normal weight.

With the recession taking its toll on purse strings everywhere, healthy food has become a major factor in weight loss. With an increased demand for cheaper junk food and fast food it has become more difficult for the obese to shed excess weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Statistics from the Imperial College London reveal that around one in 20 people in the UK will develop colon cancer in their lifetime.

This alarming figure emphasizes the importance of weight control and a healthier lifestyle, which should start at a young age. With the UK now seeing an alarming trend of overweight children it is more important than ever to establish a firm foundation of knowledge in healthy eating and nutrition.

With many people unaware that being overweight can actually increase the risk of cancer, the study hopes to shed some light on the matter and raise awareness.

Patients who want to lose weight can be assured they will receive a top class service with The Hospital Group.

The Hospital Group is the UK’s biggest provider of weight loss surgery, including gastric bands, gastric bypasses and gastric balloons which can give you a healthier lifestyle.

David Ross, Chief Executive of The Hospital Group said: “There are a number of health afflictions associated with obesity which can seriously limit a person’s work, social and personal life.

“Those who want to lose weight and adopt a healthier lifestyle should consider a bariatric procedure, which can lead to dramatic weight loss and ultimately change a person’s life.

“Those who come to The Hospital Group, can be assured of a dedicated, professional service, with astounding success rates and a limited waiting time. This latest news is just another reason to seek an effective weight loss solution with The Hospital Group.”

Since The Hospital Group was established in 1992, it has risen to become the UK’s biggest weight loss surgery providers, performing more gastric procedures last year than the NHS.

Dentists Warn Against Home Whitening Kits

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

New research has revealed that the demand for cosmetic dentistry in the UK is growing at a rate of 40 per cent a year.

With high profile celebrities like Cheryl Cole reportedly investing in invisible braces to get her winning smile, and Simon Cowell apparently arranging for X factor contestants to have dental makeovers before they appear on the live shows, it is no surprise that the public want a set of flawless teeth.

However, there is growing concern among experts that in the search for the perfect smile many people are putting their teeth and gums at risk by opting for super-strong whitening solutions and using them too often.

Some are so powerful they are not legal but can easily be bought on the internet. Another fear is people are seeking bargain treatments from beauticians who are not qualified to whiten teeth.

Karen Coates, a dental adviser for the British Dental Health Foundation, is worried about the easy availability of stronger treatments. She said:Top of Form “BottOn the internet I’ve come across kits which are up to 33 per cent hydrogen peroxide which is much too strong.”

“You see so many celebrities with lovely looking teeth there is a temptation to overdo it.

“Treatments are perfectly safe if done by or under the supervision of a dentist. You should be realistic about what you hope to achieve and opt for a natural look.”

Those who are worried about a gap toothed grin, or a crooked smile can put things straight with a dental consultation at The Hospital Group.

The Hospital Group’s NuSmile Cosmetic Dentistry Centres, offer Individual Treatment Plans using a range of procedures from veneers and whitening to braces, implants and crowns; to help you to achieve a brighter, whiter and more attractive smile that you will be proud of.

David Ross, Chief Executive of The Hospital Group, said: “”Being embarrassed about your smile can severely damage your social and work prospects.

“A dental consultation at The Hospital Group can put an end to years of worry and help people feel more confident about their appearance.

“At The Hospital Group we offer several cosmetic dentistry treatments including invisible braces, teeth whitening, Nusmile veneers, crowns and dental implants all of which are carried out by our dedicated and professional expert cosmetic dentists who want to help you get the look you are after.”

Today’s Love Handles Could Be Tomorrow’s Boob Job?

breast enlargement

Many women dream of losing an inch or so from their hips or thighs and boosting their breasts- but soon it could become a reality for women thinking about having a boob job.

The procedure – which liposuctions fat from areas like the stomach or thighs and then reinserts it into breast tissue has been experimented with for years, but has seen as a recent resurgence due to public interest in more natural breast enlargement options.

However, unlike silicone breast implants, fat transfer only promises a modest enlargement at most; possibly one cup size or so. It is also thought it would be difficult for younger patients to undergo fat transfer, because the skin needs to be able to stretch- but it could be suitable for mums who are looking to improve their shape following pregnancy.

Those who are looking to achieve the body they have always wanted should come for a consultation at The Hospital Group. The Hospital Group perform an extensive range of breast enlargement procedures, ranging from breast reduction, to uplift, enlargement and nipple reduction and reshaping. Their specialist surgeons perform 1000’s of procedures each year with great results.

David Ross, Chief Executive of The Hospital Group said: “The Hospital Group prides itself on offering a very personalised service. Women can opt for a natural looking uplift to boost confidence after giving birth, or choose implants to opt for a more curvaceous body shape.

“Whatever the choice, patients can be assured of a dedicated, professional service, with astounding success rates. Our surgeons have years of experience, and can advise you honestly on how The Hospital Group can adapt your body – and ultimately change your life.”

Losing Weight Is As Hard As Quitting Smoking

Weight Loss

Weight Loss

New research has revealed that losing weight can be as hard as stubbing out a smoking addiction.

The study revealed that nine out of 10 GPs believe losing weight can be as difficult as quitting smoking, where judgement can be clouded by cravings.

As a result it seems dieters don’t take the time to count how many calories they are consuming each day.

Whilst smokers crave a nicotine hit, dieters yearn for sugary and fatty delights that make weight loss an uphill struggle and cause the overweight to underestimate the amount of calories they are actually consuming in a day.

Data from 10,000 slimmers and 200 doctors revealed that 87 per cent of dieters underestimate how many calories they are eating. It’s not surprising when the average sized packet of crisps contains around 180 calories and an average sized chocolate bar contains around 200 calories.

Perhaps it is for this reason that nine out of 10 people who cautiously watch their weight see their diets fail and one in five end up weighing more than they did when they started dieting.

Nutritionist Dr Chris Fenn said: “People need to adopt a personalised approach to weight loss tailored to their own situation, challenges and strengths.”Those who are locked in a battle with their weight should book a consultation with an expert bariatric surgeon at The Hospital Group.

The Hospital Group is the UK’s biggest provider of weight loss surgery, including gastric bands, gastric bypasses and gastric balloons.

David Ross, Chief Executive of The Hospital Group said: “Many people who come to the Hospital Group have spent years trying to lose weight. Unfortunately it is a very difficult process; people need a lot of help and support and in most cases that support system is not there.

“The Hospital Group only have the best weight loss surgeons with maximum experience in the field on hand to offer you expert advice.

“Our consultants ensure that, as well as having an absolute need for a gastric procedure, the patient understands that weight loss surgery isn’t a miracle cure and they would need to work with the band to achieve the healthier lifestyle they desire.”
