For years women have been told that drinking wine causes them to gain weight and pile on the pounds but new research has revealed the opposite is true.
A new study carried out by researchers in America found that women who like the odd tipple of wine are likely to gain less weight than those who just stick to mineral water.
The study of more than 19,000 women found that teetotallers were more prone to gaining weight than those who drank wine every now and then. The study also revealed that moderate female drinkers had a lower risk of obesity.
The good news for women who enjoy the occasional small glass of white wine is that it contains around 130 calories and a small glass of red wine only about 120 calories. The new research proposes that a calorie from alcohol has less effect on weight than calories from other food products, with one theory suggesting that alcohol is broken down by the liver to create heat rather than fat.
Findings showed red wine is the best wine to drink, with results indicating that red wine lovers put on the least amount of pounds. However, beer and spirits aren’t a girl’s best friend with the study revealing women who enjoyed these alcoholic beverages piled on the pounds.
However, women should be aware that drinking more than the advised two to three units of alcohol a day can cause serious health problems such as high blood pressure, liver disease and depression and that drinking alcohol is not the solution to weight loss.
Those who have cut out the calories of alcohol but still unable to shed excess stones can come for a consultation with an expert bariatric surgeon at The Hospital Group.
