   Frequently Asked Questions

Breast implantsQ: What do breast implants look like?

A breast implant is soft and malleable.  It comes in a range of shapes and sizes.  The photo below illustrates a breast implant, but it's very useful to see one for yourself.  After all, it will be part of your body!  You will be shown a breast implant in your consultation.

Q: Where do the implants go - "under" or "over" the muscle?

At your consultation and in discussion with you, your surgeon will choose the positioning of the implant, depending on  your physical characteristics.

  • "Submuscular" - implant placed partially or totally under the pectoralis major muscle

  • "Subglandular" - implant placed on top of the muscle and over the glands

Q: What procedures use breast implants?

An implant is used to add volume to the breast.  Implants will always be used in a breast enlargement and if desired may also be used within a breast uplift

Q: Why is cohesive gel best?

cut cohesive gel implant - gummy bear implantSilicone gel is a viscous, cohesive gel material, which results in a breast implant that is soft to the touch, but can still maintain its general shape in the body.  The word "cohesive" literally means that the particles tend to stick together. This image shows just how cohesive the gel is if it were cut.  That's why some surgeons in the USA describe cohesive gel implants as "gummy bear" implants
