One woman's story of her struggle with weight, and how she lost an incredible 9
stones after gastric band surgery. Sharon Isaac, The Hospital Group's Weight
Loss Winner of the year, was unable to get pregnant due to her size, and feared
for her health and life. She tells how gastric band surgery changed all that,
what the side effects and results were, and how she learned to live with the band.
Weight Loss Surgery Patient of the Year!
Recognising the fact that gastric band surgery is now part of everyday life and
an acceptable method of fighting obesity, The Hospital Group announced the winner
of weight-loss surgery patient of the year – and it’s a double celebration for the
winner, Sharon Isaac, as she had also just found out she was pregnant.
The Award, presented to Sharon at The Hospital Group’s flagship “state of the art”
clinic in Weymouth Street, is set to become an Annual award presented to the patient
who has lost a dramatic amount of weight and seen a substantial change in their
lives as a result of their
surgery.
A year on...
Sharon was chosen from literally thousands of patients who have had gastric band
surgery by The Hospital Group in the last year. Sharon has lost over half her body
weight with a staggering weight loss of over 9 stone since having the band fitted
in September 2006.
A year on, Sharon’s life has completely changed for the better with a striking
transformation! Weighing in at only 11 stone (her original weight was 19 stone),
the effect of weight loss on her life has been profound – ending long periods of
dangerously high cholesterol, comfort eating and endless weight gain. Unable to
conceive another child due to her weight, she is delighted to say that she is now
pregnant thanks to the band.
An inspiration to other women, Sharon commented, “Surgery is not for everyone, but
for many it is a life-line. I was literally a time bomb - a heart attack waiting
to happen. Weight loss is hard but you have to take control. Surgery has given me
back my life. Before my gastric band surgery I was too embarrassed to see old friends, I wouldn’t
go on holiday and avoided swimming pools at all costs!”
She previously tried every form of dieting, with limited success. Sharon decided
to consider surgery after a suspected stroke, the two paramedics were unable to
lift the stretcher Sharon was on. Although the scare was not as serious as a stroke,
Sharon was diagnosed with dangerously high cholesterol levels, therefore she opted
to have the Gastric Band fitted. Now a year later, Sharon is fighting fit, extremely
active and regularly taking her son swimming. She can now control her eating habits,
instead of her eating habits controlling her.
People’s reaction has been incredible to the new slim-lined Sharon. “Before surgery
I could only shop at Evans – now the world is my oyster. I can shop anywhere, and
surgery has given me a renewed interest in clothes”.
The Gastric Band and Bypass have fast become popular and effective mediums for permanent
weight loss and to help assist the ever increasing battle with obesity in the 21st
Century. The Hospital Group have found that in the last 3 years the amount of weight-loss
surgery procedures booked have risen by 310% reinforcing that demand for procedures
has increased along with the acceptance of the various obesity surgery procedures
like the gastric band and bypass.
